Nine artists took part in a month of programming built around daily studio visits and institutional tours, alongside practical sessions on grant writing, social media, and portfolio preparation — skills aimed squarely at helping artists navigate New York's professional art ecosystem. The program was supported by the Brooklyn Arts Council.

Alex Vlasov

Visual artist, US

Alex Vlasov is a Russian-born, US-based visual artist working primarily in painting and mixed media. Vlasov participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. His practice is grounded in oil painting and engages perception, abstraction, and the tension between visual chaos and structural order, often drawing from figurative and surreal traditions. He is currently an MFA candidate in Painting at Michigan State University (Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum MFA Exhibition, 2026) and holds a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, particularly in institutional and university-affiliated gallery contexts.

Andrés Mario de Varona

Artist & photographer, New Mexico

Andrés Mario de Varona is an artist and photographer based in New Mexico, USA. De Varona participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. His photographic practice centers on staged performance, ritual, and collaborative portraiture, developed further in the years following CPR. The ongoing series TRIALS has been presented through platforms including Pictura Gallery (FAR), Bloomington, and was featured at PhMuseum Days 2022 (shortlisted and projected). Additional recognition includes an Honorable Mention from Innovate Grant (2023) and features in international media such as NPR-affiliated publications. Working within constructed desert environments in New Mexico, his work explores grief, memory, and embodied testimony through photography.

Catalina Reyes

Lens-based media artist, Amsterdam

Catalina Reyes Navarro is a Chilean lens-based media artist based in Amsterdam. Reyes participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. Her work approaches time as a social and political construction, using moving image, installation, and photography to examine how memory and identity are shaped through personal, political, and environmental frameworks. Exhibitions include Het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam), Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort), De Doelen / Het HEM (Amsterdam), Zone2Source (Amsterdam), and Van Every/Smith Galleries (USA). She has received support from the AFK Fund, Cultuurfonds, and Sandberg Instituut Profile Fund, and holds an MA in Fine Arts from the Sandberg Instituut (Amsterdam).

Coco Ma

Mixed media artist, New York

Coco Ma is a New York–based mixed media artist working across sculpture, installation, and painting. Ma participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. Her practice develops through assemblage-based installations that combine sculptural, painterly, and digital processes, producing environments that oscillate between familiarity and abstraction. Rather than following linear narrative structures, her work constructs perceptual tension through material hybridity and psychological space. She has presented work at Susan Eley Fine Art (New York), Las Laguna Gallery (California), and bG Gallery (Santa Monica), as well as in academic contexts at Hunter College (New York).

Dimen Abdulla

Artist, playwright & dramaturge, Stockholm

Dimen Hama Abdulla is a Kurdish-Swedish artist, playwright, and dramaturge based in Stockholm. Abdulla participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022 as part of a multidisciplinary practice spanning visual art, performance, dramaturgy, and narrative-based installation. Working across text, painting, sculpture, and theatrical forms, her practice explores storytelling as a spatial and emotional structure shaped by migration, memory, and displacement. Moving fluidly between spoken language and image, Abdulla develops works where narrative unfolds through both visual composition and performative tension. Born in Kurdistan in 1984 and raised in Sweden, her work is informed by lived experiences of migration and the complexities of belonging. Abdulla studied at the Royal Institute of Art and Stockholm University of the Arts, and has written for institutions including Dramaten, Stockholm City Theatre, Unga Klara, and Regionteater Väst. Her recent exhibitions include Lie Fallow at Saskia Neuman Gallery and presentations at Bonniers Konsthall and Market Art Fair.

Ekaterina Muromtseva

Visual artist, New York/Europe

Ekaterina Muromtseva is a Russian-born visual artist based between New York and Europe. Muromtseva participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. Working across painting, installation, video, and drawing, her practice engages personal and collective memory through lyrical-conceptual narratives and constructed forms of documentation. Solo exhibitions include presentations at M HKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp), Garage Museum of Contemporary Art (Moscow), Moscow Museum of Modern Art, XL Gallery (Moscow), and the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial (Japan). She has also participated in Steirischer Herbst Festival (Graz) and Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art (Copenhagen), and is a recipient of the Innovation Prize (Russia) and the Present Continuous program (M HKA / V-A-C Foundation), with inclusion in Forbes Russia’s “30 Under 30” (2020).

Joakim Forsgren

Artist, curator & musician, Stockholm

Joakim Forsgren is an artist, curator, and musician based in Stockholm. Forsgren participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. Working across installation, performance, moving image, sound, and curatorial projects, his practice investigates nationalism, historical mythologies, and systems of belief. He constructs spatial and archival environments that merge text, sound, and installation-based approaches. Solo exhibitions include He stopped weaving when I was born (Extension Art Space, Stockholm, 2022), The Mind-Body Problem (Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, 2019), and Underjordiska förbindelser (Ljusdal, 2018). He has also participated in the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA, 2017), developing an ongoing engagement with cultural memory and ideological structures.

Johanna Härkönen

Visual artist, Finland/New York

Johanna Härkönen is a Finnish-born, New York-based visual artist. Härkönen participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. Her painterly and material practice combines wax, print, and digital processes, using software and mechanical reproduction systems to explore abstraction, figuration, and technological memory. Through the interaction of digital fragments and encaustic surfaces, her works operate as unstable archival forms where image, object, and process merge. Exhibitions span contemporary art contexts across Europe and the United States, including presentations in New York-based and Nordic institutions. Her practice engages transformation, ritual, and the shifting boundaries between digital and material image systems.

Liliana Farber

Visual artist, Uruguay/New York

Liliana Farber is an Uruguayan-born, New York-based visual artist. Farber participated in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2022. Her practice has evolved into a research-based investigation of digital systems, custom software, and data infrastructures, producing images, installations, and web-based works. Exhibitions include the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Ars Electronica Festival, National Museum of Contemporary Art (Lisbon), WRO Media Art Biennale, and Arebyte Gallery (London). In 2019, she presented Terram in Aspectu at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale. She is a recipient of the Lumen Prize for Art and Technology and the Stuttgarter Filmwinter Network Culture Award, and her work is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.
