The edition

What this one was about.

Framed around the theme "Building Capitals, Finding Capital: Developing Projects across Prague, Warsaw, and Kyiv," this edition looked at how curators build cultural capital — both financial and symbolic — in three Eastern European capitals undergoing rapid institutional change.

Eight curators, from Colombia, Peru, Sweden, Nigeria/the USA, Spain/Germany, Argentina, and Italy, took part in daily studio visits and institutional tours, supplemented by lectures on regional socio-political history. The program partnered with IZOLYATSIA in Kyiv, the Center for Contemporary Art in Prague, and the AIR Laboratory at CCA Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. Each curator then developed a project proposal for their home city; one winner received a production grant of up to $10,000 USD. A public presentation of the program's research took place in Kyiv on September 7. The program was directed by Carmen Ferreyra and Jorgelina Dacil Infer.

Alessandra Troncone

Art historian & curator, Naples

Alessandra Troncone is an art historian and curator based in Naples. Since participating in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Troncone has built an international curatorial career spanning research, teaching, and exhibition-making. She co-curated the 12th Kaunas Biennial, serves as Artistic Co-Director of Underneath the Arches in Naples, and has held curatorial roles with La Quadriennale di Roma. A professor of Art History at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, her practice bridges contemporary art, historical research, and site-specific curating.

Emma Hazen

Curator & writer

Emma Hazen is a curator and writer working in contemporary art. Since participating in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Hazen has developed a research-driven curatorial practice focused on contemporary art, institutional programming, and critical dialogue. Her work spans exhibitions, writing, and collaborative initiatives that engage artists and audiences through interdisciplinary approaches to curating and cultural production.

Joseph Gergel

Artist, curator & writer, New York

Joseph Gergel is an artist, curator, and writer based in New York. After joining the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Gergel expanded an international practice spanning contemporary art, curating, and writing. He is the founder of JG | Curatorial Projects in Lagos and currently serves as Director of the Arthouse Foundation Artist Residency Program as well as Specialist and Curator at Arthouse Contemporary. His work engages digital culture, collaborative practice, and evolving models of exhibition-making across global contemporary art networks.

Mariana Rodríguez Iglesias

Independent curator, writer & art critic, Buenos Aires

Mariana Rodríguez Iglesias is an independent curator, writer, and art critic based in Buenos Aires. After joining the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Rodríguez Iglesias expanded a prominent curatorial and critical practice in Latin America. Her work spans exhibitions, writing, and research, with a strong focus on contemporary artistic production and critical discourse. Through curatorial projects and publications, she contributes to ongoing conversations around emerging artistic practices and regional cultural exchange.

Melissa Aguilar

Curator, researcher & cultural manager, Mexico City

Melissa Aguilar is a curator, researcher, and cultural manager based in Mexico City. A participant in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Aguilar has developed a dynamic curatorial practice centered on contemporary Latin American art, institutional programming, and interdisciplinary research. Her work spans exhibitions, cultural management, and collaborative initiatives that foster dialogue between artists, institutions, and diverse audiences across regional and international contexts.

Pedro Portellano

Curator, musician & cultural manager, Madrid

Pedro Portellano is a curator, musician, and cultural manager based in Madrid. A participant in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Portellano has built a multidisciplinary practice at the intersection of music, sound, and visual art. He has curated programs for the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, founded the RAYO audiovisual festival, and directed Nave de Música at Matadero Madrid. His work continues to shape innovative programming across performance, exhibition-making, and sound-based practices.

Rosanna del Solar

Curator & researcher

Rosanna del Solar is a curator and researcher working internationally. A participant in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, del Solar has developed a practice centered on contemporary art, research, and cultural exchange. Her work spans exhibitions, writing, and collaborative initiatives that create dialogue between artists, institutions, and public audiences across local and global contexts.

Susanne Ewerlöf

Curator, researcher & educator, Gothenburg

Susanne Ewerlöf is a curator, researcher, and educator based in Gothenburg. Since participating in the Curatorial Program for Research in 2016, Ewerlöf has developed an interdisciplinary practice bridging curating, teaching, and artistic research. She is currently a PhD candidate in Artistic Research at HDK-Valand and serves on the management team of CPR. Her work focuses on critical pedagogy, collaborative knowledge production, and experimental curatorial models at the intersection of artistic practice, research, and education.
